“We can’t all be heroes, because somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by.” . . . Will Rogers
Each event requires that vets and guardians find their way from their home to the event location. Most of the vets are in their 80s and 90s and many no longer drive. Some lack any means of flexible transportation. Transportation volunteers provide transportation to and from an event using their personal car/van/truck.
How It Works:
-
We maintain a list of people who have volunteered to help in this area.
-
When a need arises (normally discovered at a preflight meeting when we specifically ask vets about how they will be getting to/from events and to/from American Legion Post 347 on flight day) that can not be resolved by the guardian or others in the squad, the need is bumped up to the Transportation Coordinator.
-
The Transportation Coordinator calls people on the list who are reasonable matches for the issue.
-
Once a Transportation Volunteer has been found, he/she works directly with the vet to fine tune what will happen.
