Planning for 2014 is well underway.  We are changing the flight model for 2014 -- we are doubling the size of each flight (to 50 vets and 50 guardians) but will be flying fewer times (Apr, Jun, Sep and Nov).  This will eliminate the overlap of flight activities we experienced previously.  See Flight Schedule for specific flight dates

We have been flying WWII vets to DC at a rate that is higher than the vet application rate so the number of WWII vets on our waiting list continues to decline.  We expect to start flying Tier II vets later this year; Tier II vets are WWII Vets who have already been to see the WWII Memorial, Allied WWII service vets and Korean War vets.

We will run two "Welcome to Villages Honor Flight" sessions in February for new guardian applicants and new volunteers.  The goal is to provide general background on VHF and basics of being a guardian or volunteer.   Dates, times and locations are:

  • Wednesday, 19Feb'14, 6PM to 8PM, Colony Cottage Recreation Center

  • Tuesday, 25Feb'14, 9AM to 11AM, Colony Cottage Recreation Center

This will give us more time at preflight meetings to focus on actually being a guardian and on hands-on activities.

15-Aug-2014 Villages Honor Flight is developing a virtual or flightless Honor Flight program for those vet who can not fly.  The first such mission will be in September 2014.  For more information, click here

We are now half way through the 2014 "flight season"  with two missions behind us and two to go.  The Apr'14 and Jun'14 missions were twice the size of anything we have attempted in the past.  They were successful but we realized that they lacked the intimacy and sense of family that we have strived to create.  So, we are dropping back to 25/25 missions for Sep'14 and Nov'14.  There is active discussion regarding what we should do for 2014.

May, June and July saw a record number of vet applications to fly with Villages Honor Flight; application rates for those months were twice the historical average.
